Johannes Reuchlin Memorial

Johannes Reuchlin was a well-known humanist, philosopher, jurist, diplomat and important son of Pforzheim. He lived between 1455 and 1522.

Johannes Reuchlin is the most famous son of the city of Pforzheim.

He was born on 29 January 1455 and died on 13 June 1522.

In 2022 is the 500th anniversary of his death, for this reason the city of Pforzheim is organising a Reuchlin Year.

Johannes Reuchlin was a philosopher, humanist, jurist and diplomat.

He lived in Pforzheim until he left for Paris at the age of 16. However, he remained connected to his hometown throughout his life.

He was one of the first to open up the three languages of antiquity and thus also the historical texts of the Bible. He spoke Latin, ancient Greek and Hebrew and was thus called the trilingual miracle. He is one of the forerunners of the Reformation, as he made the Scriptures accessible in the original.

He is also considered a model of tolerance and interreligious dialogue.
